Expert Witness Services

The National Consumer Law Center is expanding its expert witness services with Margot Saunders, in her new capacity as Of Counsel to the Center, providing the highest level of expertise and consultation on consumer law issues. The breadth of experience of Saunders and our other NCLC consumer law specialists allow us to offer assistance not available elsewhere.

Saunders can provide expertise on a wide range of issues, including:

Saunders, the former managing attorney of NCLC’s Washington office, is experienced in a broad range of consumer law issues, having authored several books on consumer law, and provided expert analysis to Congressional committees and federal agencies on many occasions. Saunders was a member of the Federal Reserve Board’s Consumer Advisory Council, where she co-chaired the Consumer Credit Committee during her tenure, and the American Water Works Association Public Advisory Forum.

She is co-author of NCLC’s Consumer Banking Payments Law (all 3 Editions) and Foreclosures (2006 Supplement), and a contributor to The Cost of Credit: Regulation and Legal Challenges (3d ed. 2005) on credit math issues. She also has written numerous articles on consumer law, including The Credit Card Market and Regulation: In Need of Repair, 10 N.C. Banking Inst. 23, University of North Carolina School of Law Banking Institute, 2006;  Federal Regulation of Consumer Credit: The Cause or the Cure for Predatory Lending? Joint Center for Housing Studies, Harvard University, BABC, March 2004; The Increase in Predatory Lending and Appropriate Remedial Actions, 6 N.C. She has also authored a number of books and articles on utility law issues that affect low-income people.

Since 2005, in addition to continuing her other duties for NCLC, Saunders has provided expert consulting and testimony and analysis in predatory lending, servicing and credit math cases.

Before joining NCLC in 1991, Saunders was the consumer specialist for North Carolina Legal Services, and the recipient of NCLC’s Vern Countryman Award, an annual award recognizing the nation’s best consumer law attorneys for their outstanding advocacy on behalf of low-income consumers.

Support for Pro-Bono/Legal Services

As a result of funding grants, free consultation is available to pro bono and legal aid lawyers in California, Massachusetts, and Washington state regarding low-income and elderly clients, and elsewhere in cases involving pro bono representation of elderly consumers. For more than thirty years, NCLC has been on the forefront of developments affecting consumer law and litigation. Our specialists average more than 15 years of consumer law experience. This breadth of experience and our access to resources not widely available permit us to offer consumer attorneys high-quality assistance not available elsewhere.

Requests may also be made by mail or fax, and you should include the transaction documents and summary of any unusual facts. We will then contact with an estimate of our fee. Our services can often be provided on an expedited basis when necessary.

We can provide assistance to consumers only through their attorneys.
