Consumer Law Attorneys

The National Consumer Law Center is seeking outstanding attorneys with at least five years of experience to specialize in consumer issues affecting low-income Americans. As members of NCLC’s advocacy staff, the attorneys will develop and implement strategies that help combat exploitive practices in the marketplace. The position is available in NCLC’s Washington, DC office or in Boston. Some travel required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in consumer credit law preferred, including Truth-in Lending, debt collection practices, credit discrimination, foreclosure defense, or consumer bankruptcy;
  • Excellent writing, communication and advocacy abilities;
  • Outstanding analytical and research skills;
  • Creative and well-organized;
  • Ability to work independently and with coalitions;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working on behalf of low-income consumers.

Responsibilities

The attorney will have a broad range of responsibilities, which may include:

  • Researching and writing extensively on consumer credit issues, including for NCLC legal practice manuals, newsletters, and other publications;
  • Providing legal and technical support to private and legal services lawyers, consumer advocates, and government officials;
  • Representing consumers before Congress, regulatory agencies, and other policy forums;
  • Leading workshops and training sessions for lawyers and advocates;
  • Contributing to fundraising efforts by obtaining grants and contracts;
  • Supervising law students on projects;
  • Developing and managing projects;
  • Working on high-impact cases as part of the NCLC litigation project;
  • Some travel required.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is competitive with other public interest organizations and on NCLC scale that accounts for experience. NCLC provides a comprehensive benefits package, including excellent family medical and dental coverage and four weeks vacation.
